Recruiting just got more complicated when the NCAA lost its most recent court case. When the 5-for-5 rule went into effect [each athlete gets five years of competition in a 5-year span], the class of 2022 was not included in that decision. Some athletes in that class sued, and a Louisiana judge sided with them.
The problem we’re seeing is that most of the defendants in this case have gone on to professional football. When they did not make the roster of their pro team, they wanted to return to play college football again. The court said they could.
At least three players have been recruited by head coach Lane Kiffin at LSU since they played for him when he was head coach at Ole Miss.
This is a coaching dilemma. You have a set roster with starters probably chosen for the opening game, and now you’re welcoming former players from the NFL into your family of college players. Does this hurt team morale? Does this harm college football? How does this affect NIL and revenue-sharing at LSU? So many questions.
Unfortunately, Lane Kiffin will not be the only head coach facing this problem. College head baseball and college head men’s and women’s basketball coaches may be facing the same situation later in the year. Stay tuned.
